Inclusion and integration in mainstream education of children with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLDs) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLDs)

cre8.ed has seen in past work with SEN schools that the arts can be a key to:

  • change attitudes
  • teach potential for pupils and students to use not only their minds but all the senses to learn, understand and experience life. how to communicate, raise awareness
  • help with planning

Special Needs

Children with learning difficulties need to be fully incorporated socially and academically.

“Using cre8.ed helped us deliver subjects across the whole curriculum and enabled the school to achieve “Artsmark (Silver). Thank you to cre8.ed for being so supportive of our school.”
Mrs M Hughes, Headteacher, St Ann’s School, Hanwell

The arts, creativity and imagination form a significant part of a multi-sensory approach to develop the potential for pupils and students to use the mind and all the senses to learn, understand and experience life.

Since the earliest days of the cre8.ed team, we have been dedicated to the inclusion of special schools alongside mainstream schools to develop the policy of belonging, respect and equality for all young people.

Our artists work in a way that is age appropriate and responsive to the unique needs of each group of young people with SEN. Pupils and students explore simple and complex ideas, values and issues as they create together within the discrete disciplines of drama, dance, music and visual art.

In our experience, the quality of work by participants exceeds their own expectations and, often, goes beyond the hopes of their teachers, parents and friends. The encounter is affirming; provoking thoughts and attitudes as well as covering National Curriculum targets for the relevant ages and developing transferable skills which impact other subject areas and life in general.

“The content was easily understandable and enjoyed by all the children/students; Steve was able to hold the audience and incorporate the students’ abilities; Fru was brilliant co-ordinating the dancers and encouraging the reluctant to participate.”
Mrs Stanley, Headteacher, St Joseph’s School, Surrey
